In early 2022 I was invited by my friends at the Earthlinks retreat in Sri Lanka to paint some murals in their stunning colonial-era home. They included some reference of a mural in a similar light-filled property featuring neutral-toned walls with female forms painted in white to use as inspiration for the new, custom designs.
Communicating by Whatsapp texts, I sent through some initial sketches and within a week we had selected a few irregular, oversized Deva heads in the space to emphasise the feminine energy and observance of earthy and spiritual practices at the retreat.
Once we knew what we wanted to create, I moved onsite, photographed the spaces, and mocked up the designs I wanted to make, taking into account the time and materials we had available.
The clients really loved a specific illustration for each wall and I was able to proceed immediately. The simplicity of the linework and the beautiful surfaces as prepared by Earthlinks in advance meant I was able to finish 2 walls within a day.
We were all really happy with the result: simple, calm, striking, really pretty and a little bit magical.
This project was completed part-time in 3 weeks, from briefing to completion. This was possible because we were able to adapt existing illustrations, communicate likes/dislikes and capabilities really clearly, quickly respond to proofs, and the space was clean, prepared and well-lit by the client. I really loved this one!
